NASCAR adding more and more Fri and Sat nite racing

I seem to recall a local speedway ending it's season as football season swung into gear. But, back to scheduling local "off" weekends to avoid competing with NASCAR, I was in Alabama for the '74 Winston 500 at Telledega, and was able to attend a Late Model Sportsman show at the Fairgrounds track in Birmingham. The competitors included Red Farmer, Bobby Allison, Neil Bonnet, and Texas racer Vaughn Brune. If Talledega were a Saturday night event, certainly Bobby Allison and Neil Bonnet would not have been in Birmingham. As for Friday or Sunday, "day jobs" come into play for a lot of racers and fans. But, if needed to be told the problem, it's likely agreement won't happen. <_<

EDIT: Actually the Birmingham Fairgrounds Event was a Friday night Special Event with three LMS Features, now that applied thought comes into play.

And here is the NASCAR press release boasting about how many potential short track fans watched the NASCAR race on TV instead....

SATURDAY EVENING’S SAMSUNG MOBILE 500 DRAWS 4.0 FAST NATIONAL RATING ON FOX

FORT WORTH, Texas (April 12, 2011) – Saturday evening’s Samsung Mobile 500, the first-ever nighttime NASCAR Sprint Cup Series race in the 15-year history of Texas Motor Speedway, earned a 4.0 fast national rating on FOX, according to The Nielsen Company.

The Samsung Mobile 500 attracted more than 4.6 million households and seven million viewers for the 3-hour, 14-minute primetime live broadcast that began at 7 p.m. CT. The Samsung Mobile 500 exhibited gains in comparison to FOX’s opening night race of the 2010 season at Phoenix, which Texas Motor Speedway replaced in that Sprint Cup Series schedule slot this year.

Compared to the 2010 Saturday night race at Phoenix, held April 10 and also serving as the seventh race of the season, the Samsung Mobile 500 was up eight percent over Phoenix’s 3.7 rating as well as witnessing an 18 percent increase in viewers.

A fast rating is a national rating per The Nielsen Company that is provided early for those programs that aired in primetime. Final ratings, which typically don’t change from the fast, are available for all programs Thursday.

Nick,

It has long been my belief that the TV broadcast live events are very detrimental to local/regional auto racing on Friday and Saturday nights. The race fans that travel to attend major events would still not, of course, attend their local events. But, at least a portion of those fans might attend a nearby local speedway on Friday and/or Saturday night if the NASCAR SC event was on a Sunday afternoon. :(
