Pavement short track racing at it's best. I thought both races were really good. It looks like Honeycutt is either tied with Spencer Davis for the Pro points lead, or ahead by 1 point. They gave 2 different accountings of the points situation, but at least he's still right there. They did not have a good night, but they made the best of it. One thing is for certain, Davis is a hard-nosed driver. It cost him this time, as Honeycutt was going to be 6-8 spots behind him. Davis has turned, or seriously moved more than a couple other cars this season, and I don't recall him being posted before. I could be wrong on that though. But I do know that this one surely hurt the points lead he could have had. How about Ronnie Bassett Jr finally getting his first CARS Tour LMSC win! Again, some really aggressive driving throughout this race. I think that the officials are trying to send a message that dumping someone is not going to be tolerated going forward, as both race outcomes were affected by it. I was glad to see what looked like full grandstands at Hickory for last night. For being the "most famous short track in America", they rarely have a crowd that looks like the place is even near half full. Their normal LMSC field is usually about 8 cars. Nearly all of the other classes don't fare much better. I know that this track is hard on equipment, from wrecks and the very poor track surface. I'm pretty sure that's the same pavement that was there the last time I went there, that was in 1993. I don't think there isn't a portion that hasn't been patched, and there are holes at both ends of the track in the lower side of the corners. For the normal Sat night races, you'll see cars hit those. The worst is at the bottom of 3 & 4. They put orange cones in them for the CARS Tour races. I have a cousin that lives near there, and he said that the track isn't the biggest of the problems there. He said that the grandstands and restrooms are horrific, and he always eats big before he goes there. He said that what baffles him, is that the Governor gave almost $46m to race tracks during Covid. Hickory got nearly $500k of that money. He said that nothing has changed 2 years after they got that money. So, did the cars go somewhere else because the track is well past showing it's age, or because the fans stopped coming because of the bad fan experience and low car counts? Or both. Either way, I don't see how they are still hanging on. There are much nicer facilities, that are within an hour of Hickory, and they have better car and fan counts, according to my cousin. I hope that they can survive. Edited August 2 by ron.brown11

ron.brown11
Lots of fines & suspensions handed out for the LMSC group. I had the feeling that they were trying to send a message, but it involved more than the obvious ones that were visible. Andrew Grady got popped hard: First he got a $500 fine and probation for the rest of the season, for crossing the track to confront another driver (threw his HANS device at Huffman if I remember correctly), and a 3 race suspension plus another $1000 fine for threatening a CART S Tour official. Buddy Isles got the same $500 and probation for the remainder of the season, also for crossing the track to confront another driver. Ryan Millington got probation for the rest of the season, after spinning Conor Hall at the finish of the race. Two crew members got 1 race suspensions for going into another competitor's pits to confront, plus a $500 fine each. Just another night at the races.. ron.brown11
This weekend the CARS Tour will run the make up races at North Wilkesboro!! Honeycutt is the Pro LMS points leader by 1 point. He will run that race for the #51 team Chevy Camaro. He will also be racing the LMSC race, driving the #17 Usry Ford Mustang. There are 40 entries so far for the LMSC field, and 34 for the Pro field. Right now Accuweather is forecasting a 43% chance of rain. I sure hope that they don't get rained out again. In the announcement article on FloRacing's site, Kaden got 7 paragraphs in the article. It was great seeing Kevin Harvick at the Hickory race last weekend, and since he will be running the #62 in the LMSC, we'll get to see him again. I don't see Dale Jr listed as a driver, but I would think that he'll probably be there. Because NASCAR is on break, I would think that a lot of extra eyes from team owners & drivers will be watching. Here's another example of how the CARS Tour is making things happen, Conor Hall will be racing the #91 truck at Richmond. He will be a teammate to Eckes, and that's a strong team. Very happy for him. Qualifying will start at 4:45 there, 3:45 here. Racing will start at 8:30 there/ 7:30 here, on FloRacing. That's if Mother Nature doesn't have other ideas.
